Join us for this online event!

Tuesday, December 10, from 5pm to 7pm ET.

We live in an increasingly polarized world divided along political/ideological lines. Conscious of upcoming Canadian federal and provincial elections (as well as the tensions of the recent U.S. elections), we would like to offer a contemplative space for more discerning conversation in light of our faith.

In the spirit of collaboration and cooperation, this forum space is being hosted by a number of partners: Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Toronto, Catholic Conscience, Centre Oblat, Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice, Mary Ward Centre, Office of Religious Congregations for Integral Ecology, Regis College, Sisters of St Joseph Toronto.

To begin our conversation Ted Penton, SJ, former Secretary of Justice and Ecology for the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, will provide insight into the critical relationship between contemplation and political action. Participants will then enter into small listening circles for a facilitated conversation.

To prepare for this event it is important you take the time to read the document ‘Contemplation and Political Action: An Ignatian Guide to Civic Engagement’ (download it here) and reflect on the following reflection questions:

  1. What struck me most from the document?
  2. What election issues will likely determine my vote? What do I find influences my vote (ie. social media, podcasts, television, newspapers/magazines, friends, faith community, etc)? What do I feel should NOT influence my vote?
  3. How can I be more prayerfully discerning during election times? What prayers or faith-rooted practices could help me to see God at work in the political process?

We look forward to seeing you during this gathering, and to building our practice of contemplative political engagement together.
