The Jesuit Forum would like to share the attached news from the Provincial of the Jesuits of Canada of the coming closure of the Forum.

We are sad to share this news with you. But also hope the new efforts towards greater consolidation and sustainability of our social ministries will continue to bear fruit within our church and surrounding communities, as outlined in the Provincial’s letter below.</a >

Know we are very grateful for all your support of the mission of the Jesuit Forum over nearly 20 years… through both your confidence in our programming initiatives and your ongoing financial support of them and our team, beginning with Fr. Bill Ryan, SJ. We are very grateful. Know this support had impact upon all those who were part of our community… particularly through our resources - such as Listening to Indigenous Voices over these last years - webinar forums, sharing circles, Open Space, and most recently our venture into podcasting.

Over the next 3 months we will gradually wrap up our remaining programming partnerships, such as with Environmental NGO leaders currently engaged with Listening to Indigenous Voices, collaboration with 'For the Love of Creation' in the continuing development of its Climate Conversations resources, continued engagement with grant recipients of our new Micro-Grant program in support of community social action initiatives, as well as with a coming webinar series in partnership with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Canada upon the issue of poverty and disability (stay tuned for a coming separate announcement).

If you have any further questions I would be happy to try to address them. But you may also desire to seek greater clarity with our Jesuit Province office, or with Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), in addition… to the Provincal or Province Socius: https://jesuits.ca/about-us/provincial-staff-contact-information/</a >

Again, we are very grateful for your support. I personally hope to continue to engage with you on the discernment of the social issues and concerns of our time in further and creative ways down the road!

Easter Blessings.

In gratitude,

Trevor Scott, SJ

Closure of the Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice

As part of a broad effort to restructure and strengthen our social apostolates amid limited resources, the Jesuits of Canada announce that the Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice (the Forum) will close this summer.

The Forum was established in 2007 under the leadership of Fr. Bill Ryan, SJ. Its purpose was to help people engage with the many issues that shape our world — while ensuring that their experience of faith remained integral.

During its 19 years of operation, it has been a place of real encounter for questions of justice. One defining feature has been its listening circles. These have helped individuals from all walks of life explore the big ideas of our time in a communal setting, with the intention of fostering more discerning action. To facilitate this important reflection, the Forum produced resource guides such as A Dialogue Guide for Laudato Si’ and — most recently — Listening to Indigenous Voices.

The Jesuits are grateful for everything the Forum has done. Yet, to ensure our commitment to social change endures, we undertook a process of discernment to narrow our scope and better align our resources. There is recognition that collaboration is necessary in today’s complex world. To build God’s kingdom of justice and peace (Romans 14:17) concretely, we must deepen the connections among our projects; we cannot work in silos.

The Jesuits of Canada are therefore consolidating our activities and deepening the impact of our existing justice-related works. This includes what is done in our schools and parishes, as well as what is happening at institutions such as Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) and the Jesuit Refugee Service Canada. As part of this renewal, the Province will establish a new position at CJI that draws on investment revenues that previously sustained the Forum.

This part-time position, which will be reviewed in three years, will streamline our efforts in Canada and help the Jesuit network flourish. We believe this role will provide the stability needed to ensure our commitments are both coordinated and effective. In short, a greater integration of financial and human resources will allow our initiatives to have the widest possible reach.

The Executive Director of the Forum, Fr. Trevor Scott, SJ — on behalf of his staff and Board — expresses his gratitude to those who supported the Forum. Your financial contributions and participation in its programming have brought us to this point of positive transition.

The Jesuits of Canada invite you to remain engaged with our justice-related works, including Canadian Jesuits International and its mission partners.
